Jakarta
Textile Museum is an educational institution of cultural mission to
preserve the culture of traditional Indonesian textiles. As
the only Textile Museum in Jakarta and Indonesia's first have a
specific task, the Textile Museum strives to carry out its functions
through various program activities were held for the public.The
activities were organized by the Textile Museum, among others exhibits
(museum collections as well as third party collections), seminars,
discussions and workshops on textiles; penyuluhun for students; research
collections to the various regions and literature; care of museum
collections; textile conservation services and various training (batik, jumputan, natural colors, etc.).Textile
Museum occupies an old building reserved, has a colonial architecture
and history that has its own charm from the point of tourism. Textile
Museum building was originally a private home of a French citizen (19th
century), which is then sold to a Turkish Consul. Karel further ownership passes to Christian Crucq (1942). While Jakarta was burned fighting spirit to gain independence, the building was used as the headquarters of BKR. After
the revolution is complete, the building was occupied successively by
Sion Phin Lie (1947), Ministry of Social Affairs, before finally
inaugurated as the Textile Museum.The
idea to establish the Textile Museum emerged from the background of
1975 signaled that the flood of modern textiles has a lot of shifting of
traditional textiles archipelago. Proponent
idea is Indonesia Traditional Fabric Lovers Group WASTRAPREMA, Mr.
Ir.Safioen (then as Director General of the Ministry of Textile
Industry). Governor
of Jakarta at the time was occupied by Mr. Ali Sadikin support these
efforts and provides a place for the museum to be established that the
building is located on Jl. Tubun No. KS. 4 Petamburan, West Jakarta. On
June 28, 1976 the building was opened as a museum of textiles by Mrs.
Tien Soeharto (the First Lady at the time) in the presence of Mr. Ali
Sadikin as Governor of DKI Jakarta.In
1998 the Government of DKI Jakarta Textile Museum expansion area to the
east and also to make the old building on Jl KS Tubun No.. 2
as a means of supporting the activities of the museum to accommodate
the participation of the community to participate in developing a
thriving contemporary textiles in Indonesia, so the building is named
for Contemporary Textiles Gallery. Building
II was inaugurated on 21 November 2000, marked by the ongoing
activities of the prime form Iwan Tirta Batik Collection Exhibition,
Textile Museum in collaboration with Yayasan Mitra Museum Wastraprema
and Indonesia. Further
consecutive've also organized cooperation activities with the
Indonesian-American Friendship Association (PPIA), French Cultural
Center, Cultural Center of Mexico, as well as several institutions /
other community groups.Early
collections gathered at the Textile Museum is obtained from donations
Wastraprema (about 500 collections), further growing through the
purchase by the Department of Museums and History / Museum and
Restoration Department / Department of Culture and Museum, as well as
donations from the community, either individually or in groups. Until now the Textile Museum in 1914 recorded a number of pieces.
